In the latest round of Sarah Palin bashing, Vanity Fair has sunk to an all-time low and is apparently now recruiting writers in a jr. high playground. We’re led to believe that “V.F.’s red-pencil-wielding executive literary editor, Wayne Lawson” has given Palin a knock-out punch. What bothers me is the ignorance of both the “editors” of this particular piece, and that of their readers.
Certainly the likes of a major magazine’s “red-pencil-wielding executive literary editor,” with the help of said magazine’s “research and copy departments” are literate enough to realize that they are editing a transcript from Federal News Service. I’m not even employed by a major magazine, much less a “red-pencil-wielding” anything, and I can see the text plainly typed at the top of the page. The Huffington Post crew obviously skipped that obvious point when they decided to post the article.
My guess is the brains behind the hit-job decided that their readers were easily fooled and wouldn’t mind their trickery–after all, in the MSM, a joke with Sarah Palin as the punch line is worth a thousand words. Am I the only person in America who can spot a fake document when I see it? Does no one else realize that the magazine went to the trouble to falsify a hard-copy background to insinuate that Sarah Palin wrote the document and read from it? This point is especially important because the Palin-hating audience of this audience goes so far as to claim she is a narcissist because “she typed the word “applause” at the end.” This same reader goes on to degrade Sarah Palin by stating that he can picture her sitting on her “bear rug” and listening to audio of applauses in the same way that other people listen to whale calls. The ignorance and thirst for blood is mind-blowing.
The “colorful” results from the dutiful editing team are laughable at best. They imply that Palin’s words are in error, when in most instances, they are nothing of the sort. The first paragraph is a prime example. Palin states that she appreciates speaking directly to the people that she serves as governor. The editors mark through this as if it is improper. It is most certainly not improper, nor does it go against the code of the English language. The only thing that the editors achieved by that “correction” was to add more color to the falsified document, thereby creating the illusion of Sarah Palin’s ignorance. Sadly, it reminds me of a child on a playground with low self-esteem making fun of another child for having a name that the bully dislikes. There is nothing particularly wrong or offensive about the name, the bully just cannot think of anything better to say and will feel better if he insults someone else. It’s pathetic and I would hope that there are still Americans out there who can see through such tactics.
The editors go on to “correct” Palin by nixing the phrase “This is a source of inspiration for my family,” but apparently the editors are overpaid and have possibly had their intellect run off in the same manner that they claim Palin’s speech writers did. Palin was clearly referring to Lake Lucille when she said “This is a source of inspiration,” but again, the editors thought that more red ink would make her look bad, so they erroneously applied it.
In the second paragraph, the “editors” insert a comma behind what they have assumed is Palin’s period. Maybe it’s just me, but I think that Borat is the only person who would give a speech and say the words, “period…pause…begin sentence.” No, it’s not just me, the editors were wrong AGAIN. Sarah Palin did not transcribe her speech, she spoke the words, and even those at the Federal News Service cannot determine if her intent was a pause for a comma or a pause for a period. Yet again, the addition of red ink leaves the naive reader with the assumption that Palin created some writing faux pas. Regardless if there was an intended period or comma, the statement is not grammatically incorrect as it was spoken by Palin. “It’s the eve of our celebration of independence as a nation.” This is the “error” that the overpriced editors have called her on. Wow! The audacity of Palin to make a statement. There is not one thing wrong with that statement.
Move forward four words and you will see them at work again, “It’s a time to remember our nation’s dear souls who sacrificed so selflessly…” This is not incorrect, it does not make her look ignorant. The editors replaced the phrase “our nation’s dear” with the word “those.” Granted the replacement is grammatically correct, BUT SO IS THE ORIGINAL PHRASE! This is no different than a woman telling a girlfriend she should wear a red dress when the friend wants to wear the exact same dress in blue–the friend is still clothed properly, the girlfriend just happens to prefer a different hue. A matter of taste does not make someone else’s efforts flawed, regardless of how much red, blue, or green ink one uses.
In the next sentence the editors replace “centuries” with “233 years.” I’m sorry, did I miss that day in elementary school? Is 200+ years not equal to the word “centuries?” Of course it is, but again, they wanted that gotcha moment because the MSM is hell-bent on hammering the nail in Palin’s coffin. I could go on and on, as the entire piece is filled with this sort of false “correction” and it is like pouring blood in shark infested waters for VF’s readers. I don’t know if I’m more outraged at the tactics of these so-called editors or at their readers for not realizing they’ve been duped. For anyone doubting the lengths that the magazine went through to create the illusion of an authentic speech mysteriously picked up by some Palin insider, don’t take my word for it. Read the article with your eyes open this time. There are the tell-tale staple holes and corner creases which would lead an unsuspecting reader to believe this was THE document that Palin used. The editors even attempted to correct the FNS by removing the ellipses as if Palin was so stupid that she placed ellipses at the beginning of her speech. The editors can’t be bothered with the fact that the Federal News Service is an independent source who typed up this transcription while listening to Palin’s speech because to do so would mean that they couldn’t credit Palin for those pesky ellipses and the lack of an extra space after the location and date of her speech. That would mean less color, less punch and let’s face it, less of an impact in their smear campaign.
While the HuffPo commenters were busy verbally pummeling Palin for her “lack of writing skills” and accusing her of not having a journalism degree or writing her latest op-ed, the VF editors were having the last laugh. They knew that their readers weren’t very observant and they didn’t care. They don’t get paid to inform, they get paid to sensationalize and they do that well. Just look at the photo evidence before your eyes. The supposed background is a crumpled up piece of paper which has been unfolded, but oddly enough, the text flows in a seamless line across the page. There is a fake coffee stain on the first page. The writer of this article is a fraud and should be exposed as such. The only thing Palin is guilty of is speaking off-the-cuff to her constituents, I don’t fault her for that. I would rather my elected representatives give it to me straight, even if that means that they get a name wrong, and even if it means they use the word “so” when someone else might have used the word “therefore.” If anyone knows the true source behind this editing, perhaps I’ve got the perfect Christmas gift for your acquaintance…a brand new thesaurus! I for one am embarrassed that as Americans we’ve allowed our media to sink to this level.

You are absolutely correct! Anyone who has studied language formally knows that written word is much more formal than spoken word. That’s why our research papers sound quite different than the conversation we have over dinner with our family. The presentation that Palin gave was not meant to be a formal address. She was speaking to her colleagues and constituents, therefore, allowing for a more personal and informal tone to her announcement. Shame on these VF idiots for so many things, but it is utterly ridiculous that they fail to take the level of formality into account when deciding to “critique” her words.
Thanks Joanna. That is a point that I ran out of room and didn’t get to make. I was talking with my husband and thought it was crazy that these “editors” would claim some sort of literary authority regarding a person’s speech. I couldn’t help but wonder how colorful their editing of a transctiption of one of Barack Obama’s speeches would be. According to their editing standards, he pauses and has a “period” mid-sentence or at the minimum every 5-7 words. And I dare say they would demonize his “er, um, sorry about that folks” statements when his teleprompter stumbles. And no I’m not ripping on Obama’s speeches, simply pointing out the fact that an editor does not “edit” the spoken word, as these “professional” editors seem to think.
When I originally saw this article TWEETED, I was disgusted when I saw it online. THANKS for writing this. I have SUCH a bad taste in my mouth for journalists right now that I may send my 30 year old degree from Iowa State University BACK and say I’m too embarrassed to hold a degree in such a disgusting profession.
I was disgusted as well. I was ranting and complaining to my husband so he pushed me to close my mouth and write about it instead.
“The ignorance….is mind-blowing.”
I absolutely agree.
Don’t quit your day job, dearie.
Not a problem there Eric, but thanks for the career advice.
I just voice my views because I know it’s the right thing to do. No one’s paying me big bucks to be provocative or giving me any other incentive to falsify facts.
Thanks for the nice reply. I voice my views for the same reason. I find it difficult to understand how anyone can defend Palin. Is it because it’s a single-issue thing?
I can’t claim to speak for the rest of Palin’s supporters, but if you’re asking an honest question I’ll answer it honestly. This blog post in particular isn’t really about supporting Palin at all, but instead about exposing the fraud that is VF’s editing department. I don’t like to be lied to or misled and I assume that even VF’s readers feel that way. Back to why I support Palin, It is most definitely not just a single-issue thing. That probably seems strange coming from me if you’ve read my other pieces. I do share that same love of all innocent life that Palin has, but the truth is that I see something in Palin that I don’t see in many other politicians today and that is an unapologetic way of living and leading. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong down the road, but I don’t feel that I would have to worry about Palin voting “yes” on an issue like the pork-filled stimulus bill simply because she was able to secure a skate park for her constituents. I’m overgeneralizing here but I’m trying to make the point. If you followed the recent Cap and Tax debates on the floor, you would see that many were vehemently opposed to the bill, yet after some amount of arm-twisting, bargaining, and promises of something gained for their constituents or for them personally in a political sense…these politicians turned around and voted for the bill. This includes some so-called Republicans. I cannot get behind someone who I do not trust, and I trust Sarah Palin. I get the feeling that she is who she says she is, and that if you or I have a problem with that…she isn’t going to lose sleep over it. I am fortunate enough to have received a letter from her, so I personally know that she is NOT just saying the right things to get a vote or to get in the headlines. If you haven’t seen the note she sent me, I’ll give you the background. I sat down a day or so after the election was OVER and wrote her a 4 page, handwritten letter. If you read anything I’ve written, you’ll see that I tend to ramble and can be quite wordy, so her reading it was a real feat!
I am investigative by nature, so I found her home address and sent the certified letter there. I told her how I hadn’t ever been involved in politics and how I was so inspired to see someone who shared my morals and values proudly declaring that on the political scene. Obviously there was much more to the 4 page letter, but you get the point. Less than a week later, I received an envelope postmarked in Ankorage, Alaska. I fully expected a generic form letter and would have been proud to have it. But when I opened the envelope, I found a birth announcement for Trig (her youngest child, and the one who was born with Down’s Syndrome). She had also handwritten a note on the back of the birth announcement. Unlike all other politicians I’ve written to, she didn’t just say, “thank you for the kind letter” or anything of that nature. She specified the most important point in my letter and that was the fact that I had cast my first ballot ever, after being inspired to do so with her VP nomination acceptance speech. Please understand and think about this with an open mind. Palin didn’t owe me anything. I was not an AK voter, I was not even a blogger at the time, I was not a reporter, I didn’t have cameras or any other media circus surrounding me. This was just one inspirational woman showing me, little old me, a modicum of personal respect which so many politicians today don’t even know exists.
Now your turn…What, specifically, about Palin do you find hard for anyone to defend? I really do hope that you respond and that you think about why you feel that way. I would love to hear your real views on Palin. Please don’t just regurgitate what some vicious reporter or commentator has tried to make you believe, but do tell me the reasons that turn you personally off. I’m open to all views and honest discussion.
I really appreciate your honest answer and will endeavor to give you the same. My side and your side need honest dialogue. We both love our country and want what’s best for it.
One of the things I feel Palin lacks is intellectual curiosity.
Just for one example, her defenders claim she was picked on or blind sided by Katy Couric. Asking Palin about Supreme Court decisions and what she reads is not picking on anyone. I would think voters would expect a higher level of intelligence in an elected official.
Next would be her inability to stick with the truth. She keeps saying she was cleared of all ethics violations. That is simply not true. She has been cleared of most of them by a panel she picked herself. But she still had to pay the state for travel by her family.
I can only see her whipping up hate and anger during her rallies to energize the least-informed voters. Accusing President Obama of palling around with terrorists? Didn’t that bother you a little? And allowing her audience to shout “kill him” or something similar without calling them on it?
In my mind, those kind of actions put her in the same league as Beck, Coulter, O’Reilly, and Limbaugh. And I can’t shake the thought that they hate this country enough that they don’t mind making a living off people who would rather have their opinions shaped by pandering.
I’ll grant that Palin’s image is down-to-earth. She’s like the person next door, isn’t she? The only problem I see with that is I don’t think the person next door is necessarily qualified to lead a country. At least not on either side of my house.
I really look forward to a dialogue with you. You have access to my email. Please feel free to write me using that. I have no wish or need to be anonymous to you.
Eric,
I have to apologize to you. I intended to reply and continue the conversation but this came right before our family went on summer vacation and the whole thing slipped my mind. I am working on a project at the moment, but if you are still reading, I will definitely give you the time and thought that your questions and thoughts deserve. I did not intentionally ignore you. Again, my apologies.
Natalie
Wow – and the MSM questions the veracity of bloggers?
you’re missing the overall point that she screwed up a few major facts about Alaska’s history among other things. She’s supposed to the governor for the state for God’s sake! C’mon.
Ron, if you read that article (on VF) and came away with the overall point being “she screwed up a few major facts about Alaska’s history…” then I suggest you re-read it. That was most definitely not the main idea, and it wasn’t even a small portion. She didn’t “screw up” ANY facts about Alaska’s history, although the fraudulent hack-job from the supposed editors tried to make unsuspecting readers think that she did. The one factual misstep in the entire speech is debatable. She spoke of William Seward as being a cabinet member of Abraham Lincoln and they corrected her to say that he served under Andrew Johnson. Well news-flash to the editing staff, he was Secretary of State for BOTH men. Under Lincoln, Seward was looking for the US to move westward. He kept that same ideology under Lincoln and negotiated the Alaska Purchase while serving under Johnson after Lincoln’s assassination. So Palin was not factually incorrect, but have been more clear in her statement. When one is speaking off-the-cuff, for the most part, we do tend to make small goofs. Mind you, this was not a goof, it was factually correct, but as I said, was not as clear as she could be and could have been stated differently. Gee, that’s one statement, with one name out of the whole thing and the “overall point” that you took away was “that she screwed up a few major facts about Alaska’s history?” Please do share those other major facts because unlike the MSM I welcome both like-minded views and views of dissent. I just have a problem with outright lies.
Obama screws up major facts all the time. 57 states is the prime example.
Doesn’t anyone ever fact check you? Seems the base premise for your post here is “false.” I printed out the Vanity Fair transcript then proceeded to listen to Palin’s speech (it’s okay, I’ve recovered). The VF transcript matches exactly! So regardless of what you think of the VF edit, they are, in fact, editing the “exact” transcript of what she said.
When I read the version after the VF edit was performed, I found it to be a coherent and cohesive version of what Palin was trying to say. I don’t agree with much of what she said, just that it sounded much, much more professional and coherent…you know…less like the word salad she is famous for. I absolutely do not agree with your assessment of the edits. The edits that were made were not done so in order to make Palin look bad in the absence of any “real” errors, they were done because Palin is a poor writer and speaker. Period. Those of us in the professional world and even at the college level do follow basic composition and grammar. Palin has not demonstrated this in any conceptual way. If you are educated at all, it is incredibly clear that Ms. Palin’s thought process and writing and speaking skills and style are that of the junior high school level. As a woman of accomplishment, I am greatly disappointed. And no, I am not a liberal nor a Palin-hater.
Bottom line, my point is that you apparently don’t have a problem with outright lies, as you claim. The VF edit is an exact transcript. It’s a shame that you based your entire premise on that falsification because now all of your other motives are suspect, as well.
Good day.
Oh Susan, you are way off on this one. I am well aware that this is an exact transcript. That is what a transcript is, and I stated that plainly in my article numerous times. What I said is that this is not her written word, it is a transcript of her spoken word. You can fact check me all you want, but I did not misrepresent anything. Palin was “edited” for “mistakes” that were matters of opinion and style, and not based on actual errors in MANY cases. I can only think of one reason for this, as I said, to have a more colorful end result. Those of us in the professional world and at the college level also should be aware of the fact that one does not edit a transcript as if it is intended to be a written piece. The tags [end] and [applause] along with the name of the transcription service and location/date were edited as if Palin put those in and she was ridiculed for those supposed errors. That was misleading, and I don’t care if you are a liberal, conservative, or a moderate, I don’t want anyone misleading you either. Your bottom line is misguided at best. I did not base my premise on the fact that the VF’s article is a falsification of what Palin said, as I said, it was a transcript, which by definition is a written record of exactly what she said. I based my premise on what I said I was basing it on and I stand by that. The VF article is intended to make the reader believe several things, which are false. 1) that this is a copy of a speech written by Palin, complete with the word “applause” at the end. They attempted to do this by adding a wrinkled paper background to the transcript’s text. THAT is the falsification and fraud I spoke of. These were not Palin’s typed words as they were purported to be. Because of this FACT, one cannot go back and retroactively “correct” her use or lack thereof certain punctuation. 2) that Palin is a horrible writer (as evidenced by all of the red ink they were forced to apply) knowing full well that people do not speak in the same style that they write, and that Palin did not write these words, she spoke them. 3) that Palin was factually incorrect or uninformed in general (the title on HuffPo says that VF’s editors “fact checked her” and as I responded in an earlier comment, there is only one fact in question (even with the VF editors’ markup) and that fact is not false, it is simply stated in a manner that could be stated more clearly…specifically the Lincoln/Johnson timeline.)
It is a shame that you have fallen hook, line, and sinker for VF’s article and misrepresenation of their “corrections.” I find nothing wrong with you re-reading the transcript in the manner that the VF editors wrote and having that sound more coherent to you. That still does not mean that Palin did anything wrong. If you find speaking your mind to be unprofessional, you have that right and I respect that. But again, that does not mean that she was in error when the VF editors claimed that she was. Now if the article was titled, “VF staff edits transcription of Sarah Palin’s speech” that wouldn’t be a misrepresentation. It also wouldn’t raise eyebrows and give fodder to the liberal media followers. But then again that’s what they’re in business to do, so they took the less than honorable road. I am sure that any time any public official speaks, without a teleprompter, there will be a way to look back at the transcript and rewrite certain portions to make it sound more pleasing to the ear–but you’ve missed the point if you think that makes the speaker any less educated or honest. If someone holds something to be true and intellectually sound, they do not have to have the words written and/or approved by another individual, they can just say the words. Sometimes we ramble, Lord knows I’m guilty of it, but the heart of the message does not change. Why “all of [my] other motives are suspect” in your eyes has escaped me. I simply pointed out inaccuracies and misleading corrections. I have no motive with the entire article other than to be truthful.
You are really missing one important point; the exact WRITTEN SPEECH is posted on the official Alaska Govs website, complete with bad prose. She DID read from the WRITTEN SPEECH and SHE DID HAVE A TELEPROMPTOR.
I wish I had more time to go through and debate you on this but I do not. I will say it again, you “perceive” this slight against Palin. Nowhere does VF say they are editing the written Palin speech. All they say is this:
“Palin’s Resignation: The Edited Version
If you watched Sarah Palin’s resignation speech, you know one thing: her high-priced speechwriters moved back to the Beltway long ago. Just how poorly constructed was the governor’s holiday-weekend address? We asked V.F.’s red-pencil-wielding executive literary editor, Wayne Lawson, together with representatives from the research and copy departments, to whip it into publishable shape. Here is the colorful result.”
Did ya read that? They say they’re editing it to get it into “publishable” shape. That’s a hint. They’re saying how poorly constructed was her address? Even at the beginning of the transcript, it clearly states these are Palin’s “remarks.” If you want to believe that Palin gave this 20 minute speech without having written a draft, well that’s on you. Some, however, have gotten a copy of what she did write, with her notes in the margins in addition to some other oddities. You can google it, I don’t have links.
And don’t assume I bought anything hook, line and sinker. I read it for exactly what it was. I wasn’t duped. Nor have millions of others who have found themselves scratching their heads after listening to Palin speak without having someone script something coherent for her. I’m not defending the evil “liberal MSM” meme that you quote, I’m referencing what I’ve heard with my own two ears and the educated gray matter that sits between them.
The reason I said I was not a liberal hater is because your use of the meme’s liberal MSM and cap and tax (it’s cap and trade, BTW, which $arah was for b4 she was against) led me to suspect that you are a Fox fan (the least factual infotainment channel out there). For your own health and the health of this nation, please please please find another news source. I’m jus sayin……
Sarah,
Your quote: “Some, however, have gotten a copy of what she did write, with her notes in the margins in addition to some other oddities.”
Plain and simple, back it up as in were is the proof? Where are the copies that you speak of, or are you just relying on what others are saying instead of mere fact. It’s real easy to post a link…a third grader can do it.
ericmiami,
I am happy to read the thoughts of someone I disagree with, in an honest attempt at debate and freedom of expression. I commend you on that and wish others would follow suit.
Katy Couric Interview – You speak of what her defenders said with regard to the interview. A person intelligence is not reflected by the actions of those around them.
Sticking with the truth – “cite” an instance where she said she was “cleared of all ethics violations” when, at the time the statement was said, it was anything other than the truth. I am not saying it did not happen, I just have not seen nor heard it. This is the first that I have heard of the panel one that she picked. And if so, when were they picked?
Whipping up hate and anger – Cite me an instance where “she ralled” hatred and/or anger. Bill ayers is a terrorist, in which Obama did associate with. The “kill him” part was toward Bill Ayaers (link shown below). And if you have every been to a rally, it’s hard to hear what others are saying. If she did hear it, maybe she should have addressed it or maybe she was waiting for John McCain to do it. Who knows, but does that make her a bad person or someone who should not be defended?
Now, I challange you with this. Show some REAL proof of her lack of intelligence. Show some real proof of anything that she has done to be unethical. Show some real proof that she tries to rally hate and anger.
Again, I am glad to see your civilized dialog with the blogger. I wish more people would do it that way.
Cheers
Sorry, here is the link I wrote about. And, by the way, I have not heard of Obamo calling out people who have expressed, anger, hate or violence toward McCain or Palin. It goes both ways!

Stephen:
You do your side a great disservice.
Eric
Eric,
Why the insult? I gave you credit and this is the response I get for asking you to give facts?
I am a “great disservice” to my side for asking for facts? Is it because I disagree with your view’s, because I surely didn’t disagree with your reasoning. I merely asked for cited facts, that’s all.
Apparently I gave you credit to soon. I invite you to show me that I was right the first time.
Cheers!
Apparently you did give me credit too soon, Stephen. Go play in the shallow end of the pool, and best of luck even there.
I agree that many journalists are rabid for Palin’s verbal missteps, and lucky for them, she rarely disappoints. But I think this blog’s criticism of Vanity Fair misses the mark. If the thrust of your premise is that Vanity Fair misrepresented the speech through graphic design trickery, then I think you may be taking their design too literally. The point of the crinkly-paper background was not to deceive, but to provide a playful illustration–a medium for editors to, quite literally, take a red pen to Palin’s spoken words.
Vanity Fair had no obligation to print “Transcript Courtesy of Federal News Service” within the paper graphic; in fact, the magazine just as easily could have noted the source in finer print somewhere off the crinkly page. But like many readers, I saw the graphic design for exactly what it is: simply a design, a vehicle for illustrating a point.
The illustration asked the reader to imagine for a moment a persnickety editor–a person who values succinct, clear, grammatically correct prose–analyzing the construction of Palin’s speech. After reading even two lines of the text, the reader would immediately recognize that this was a new agency’s transcript, as indicated in the heading, of what was a very conversational press conference. No one was fooled, and trickery was not Vanity Fair’s point.
What I think riles you more than graphic design is that this speech embodies so much of what’s wrong with Palin’s intellect and political instincts. Conservatives fawn over her shoot-from-the-hip, talk-first-and-(maybe)-think-later style. They praise her confidence, her frankness, and her unbridled Alaskan spirit. Their praise suggests that not only do they forgive her when her rhetoric rambles, they celebrate it as an integral part of her renegade personality. In this rose-colored context, it’s difficult for conservatives to see anything wrong with what Palin says and does. If she takes a historical liberty or two, no problem. If her speeches and debates turn down paths that become difficult to follow, it’s OK. Because, hey, it’s Sarah Palin. And no one tells Sarah Palin how to be Sarah Palin.
This kind of tautological thinking allows conservatives to rationalize even Palin’s most egregious errors, from her infamous deer-in-headlights interview with Katie Couric to her irresponsible characterization of Barack Obama as a terrorist. When she digs in about Alaska’s pivotal role in protecting Americans from Russia, that’s just Sarah being zealous and inexperienced on national tv. When she suddenly abandons her post in Alaska with a vague explanation, it’s because that mavericky Sarah must have something clever up her sleeve. Sadly, this absolution of fault means that the more stubborn and strident she is in her rhetoric, the more “right” she must be, and the more admirable she appears to her fiercest admirers. Under this regime, calling her out for making a mistake isn’t just idle criticism, it’s an all-out attack on Sarah Palin’s very being. And how dare you brutalize poor Sarah for just bein’ herself?
The real point of the Vanity Fair article is to point out that Sarah makes mistakes. She’s human. And for someone with a background in journalism, she’s not much of a wordsmith. Yes, some of VF’s red ink applied to phrases that, grammatically, weren’t TECHNICALLY incorrect. In fact, given the conversational tone of her speech, I looked past quite a few of her folksy and labored sentence constructions. But generally speaking, Palin fails as a speaker mostly because, in the interest of including every patriotic bell and whistle she can think of, she forgets one simple rule: sometimes less is more. Thrift in government may have been a centerpiece of many of her stump speeches, but the concept flies out the window the moment the woman opens her mouth.
Palin’s rambling quality is particularly problematic for a politician who never met a critic she didn’t like…to respond to. To the joy of Democrats everywhere, she rises to every morsel of bait put in front of her, which means that we all can look forward to plenty of Palentertainment in the months and years to come.
The lover of books in me cringes every time I hear Palin misplace a modifier. But the rubbernecker in me loves to make fun of her phrasing, exactly the way Vanity Fair did. And you know what? That’s OK. Because that’s my sense of humor, and that’s just who I am.
You know what Scott? I’m not opposed to criticsm of Sarah Palin. It might surprise you to know that, although I disagree with many of your above criticsms, I was impressed with them. An article written in the way that you did would not offend me and would seem to point out your take on Sarah Palin, the speaker and the politician. I also was not fooled by the VF article’s trickery, which is why I was so irritated when I read comments regarding the article on Huffington Post. Their readers, God love them, WERE FOOLED. They didn’t take the time to read the words that stated it was a transcript and not her written copy of her speech. This is the reason for my article. I didn’t set out to convince intelligent people that it was not a true edit, but I did intend to point out to those who might not have paid close enough attention. The graphic representation does not embody anything for me other than another attempt to insult Sarah Palin on false premises. I do not give her credit blindly. The Katie Couric was a bad interview, like you said, she is human, and I was not impressed with that one. I’m glad that for you, the real point of the VF article was to point out that she is human, but I think you’ve read way more into it than the authors intended and have given them too much credit. I wish I had longer to address each of your well thought out points, but I am in a rush. Thank you for taking the time to share your views.
Where are their “corrections” of Obama’s speeches to cross out all the “ums” “uhs” and the like?
That man can talk for 30 minutes and not say a darn thing!

For those of you who think that the blogger implies that Sarah did not have a written speech or used a teleprompter, show me where she said that. Off-the-cuff means several things, such as not prepared for in advance. But it also means “ad-lib”, which is what Sarah did.
The Alaska Governers website posted a copy of her written speech.

If you compare the transcripted speech to her prepared speech, you will notice that some things are verbatum, such as impotant points, and the close. However, the majority is only similar in nature, with parts left out and other things added in. Hence the term “off-the-cuff” or “ad-lib”. you can see/hear that she turns the page on occassion, yousing the prepared draft as only a guidline…for a large portion of the speech.
This is actually the mark of a gifted and professional speaker. The first rule of thum in giving speaches is “DO NOT READ”, whether it be a script or from something like a power point or “teleprompter”. If anybody has taken college communication or speech classes, yuu know what I am talking about. Obama is the exact opposite, you can tell when he READS straight from a teleprompter (large majority of the time) and when he doesn’t, hence all the uhms, ahhh, uhhh, etc. It’s really commical. During this time, he often makes a lot of mistakes such as “57 states” as one person pointed out, or the time he said “my muslim faith” only to be corrected by the interviewer by saying “you mean my christian faith”. But of course, he got a pass!
But back to the marks of a gifted speaker. Don’t beleive me, read this article and try to debunk it:

The hard truth is, whatever Sarah does, those who oppose her will do everything to try to bring her down, even if it invovles manipulating facts, deciption and out right lies.
